Does anyone here know where I can find information on laws pertaining to part time employees? Particularly South Dakota laws and ones involving overnight employees.
Right now, the guy who runs the store I work at is really pissing off us part timers in the night stock crew and it's getting to the point where all getting together and walking out or something like that soon. If things do get that far, and knowing how much of a money grubber the owner is it probably will, I wanna have a bunch of legal information on all the things he's doing that he's not supposed to be doing so I can beat him over the head with it *evil grin*.
Just so you have an idea of some of the crap we have to put up with, here is one of the biggest things that currently pissing us off:
When I started working at the store two years ago we had three or four more full time employees than we have right now (and two of the full timers we have now are on extended medical leave and one is on "vacation" for drinking on the job). Since then the owner decided to start hiring part time employees only. Why? Because he can work us like full timers but doesn't have to pay us vacation time, quarterly bonuses, or holiday pay.
Our store already makes more money than any of the other grocery store of the same type in the city (there are five total) and yet it pays it's employees the lowest wages AND he's trying to do everything he can to screw us out of what money we should be making. Infact, one of our full time employees heard him say at the quarterly bonus meeting that he thought there were too many full timers on night stock because it was cutting into HIS quarterly bonus.
Not to mention, one of the day time managers quite literally called one of the part timers an idiot to our manager IN FRONT OF five part timers (who were staying late to help face the store) for thinking he deserved holiday pay. Then when that part timer who was called an idiot went to talk to the owner about it, the owner made a comment that he wasn't going to fill the full time night stock position that was open with a someone who was already working part time at night because he didn't think any of us were qualified for the job (ya because I've only been working there for two years and could face an isle in twenty minutes when it takes five day shift people an hour).
Oh and their is much more than that that's pissing us off believe you me.
I'm a data miner, I love looking up and learning random information, and for my part I intend on looking up legal information to counter the stupid crap I know he's going to try and do once things start to heat up.
